Fire protection is provided in Oshkosh by a 22-member volunteer fire department. The department provides protection to rural areas by operating the Rural Fire District's equipment.

The fire department members receive their training through the Nebraska State Fire Marshall Training Division.


The Oshkosh Volunteer Fire Department answers 40-50 calls a year, ranging from grassfires, structure fires, vehicle fires and vehicle accidents. False alarms, and search and reserve incidents. Mutual Aid calls to help other departments along with assisting Sheriffs Office on certain incidents.

The community fire insurance classifications:
inside the corporate limits of Oshkosh is 7; outside it is 8.
Members of Southwest Mutual Aid District, Central Panhandle Mutual Aid District, and Nebraska State Volunteer Fire fighters Association.
