Oshkosh, the "Goose Hunting Capital of Nebraska!"
City of Oshkosh
Oshkosh, Nebraska! A small town with personality! If your looking for
a town with the relaxed atmoshphere of a small community and no traffic jams, a place where
neighbors know and watch out for one another, a place you are recognized by name, or a
place where your groceries are still carried to the car for you after purchase, then this is
the place for you!
The friendly atmosphere in Oshkosh is reminiscent of "old time" hospitality.
A stable town, the population of Oshkosh was nearly the same in the year 2000 as it was in 1900. There have been times of higher population and growth, and times of less.
A small community that has its basis in ranching and farming, we welcome new technology and industry.
Even with reorganization and consolidation of the county schools, our education system keeps a low student to
teacher ratio to ensure individual attention to each student.
Our youth is our future. Our students continue to rank in the high median in national averages.
We have a very low crime rate, due, I suspect, to a very interactive relation with our youth.
Sports, church youth groups, and other youth organizations, (4-H, FFA, NHS, etc.) attract
a very high percentage of our total youth population. Over 90% of our high school age youth
in the area participates in one to several of the groups.
The general work force in the area is on the whole very self-motivated and high achievers.
Good work ethics, attention to detail, and high community spirit leads
to high quality employees.
It is a very self supporting community with no bonds or indebtedness, volunteers step in on many
occasions to maintain the community life. From raising funds to light the heli-pad at the hospital,
to helping by donating man-hours to keep the museums open, to raising additional funds through
bake sales to cover high utility bills at the senior center.
This is a close knit community that welcomes newcomers with open arms.
A place where people know their neighbors and stop to chat.
The grape-vine is in full swing not with vindictive gossip, but with requests for prayers when needed.
The fund raising soup and sandwich suppers, bakes sales, and auctions are generally for local groups,
events, or for residents needing a helping hand with unexpected medical needs.
A unique town, with a personality! Where advertising for local events finds signs and
posterboards tacked to barrels, kitchen chairs, or sign hangers in the center of the street
on main street.
Sidewalks in the city don't always match the neighbors walks. Old walks were set back a few feet from the street.
Newer walks have been poured street-side. It makes an intriguing pattern in many areas.
Asking for driving directions will result in some rare advice at times. Most times,
requests for directions are answered in terms such as "You know where the Smiths live?... Its
between them and the Jones' house." or "oh, that's in the building where the old Gambles store used to be."
You might get "The Post Office? Go straight two or three blocks , turn right a block. Its the building with
the green John Deere parked in the lot next to it". Very seldom do you hear... "The brick building on the
northeast corner of B and West 1st".... or a street name or address.
