Garden County Rural Fire DistrictThe Garden County Rural Fire District encompasses most of the southwestern half of Garden County with the exception of the extreme southwest corner and covers approximately 454,400.00 acres (73,500 square miles) entirely within the county. The terrain ranges from flat along the North Platte River to rolling hills and sand hills in the northern portion of the district. The land use is primarily farming, ranching, light industry and residential purposes. Communities located in the district are the small unincorporated village of Lisco and the city of Oshkosh. The Garden County fire district is bordered on the north by the Pioneer and the Heart of the Hills fire districts and the Crescent Lake Wildlife Refuge (U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service); on the east by the Lewellen (Blue Creek) fire district; on the south by the Chappell and Lodgepole fire districts; and, on the west by the Lodgepole and Broadwater fire districts. Highways serving the district are U.S. Highway 26 and Nebraska State Highways 27 and 92. The Union Pacific Railroad serves. the district. The Oshkosh Rural Fire District was organized in 1960. The fire district has fire stations located in Oshkosh and Lisco as well as fire equipment located on a ranch 9 miles north of Oshkosh and on a ranch 15 miles north of Lisco. The unincorporated village of Lisco, population 90, is located on U.S. Highway 26 seventeen miles west of Oshkosh. The Lisco volunteer fire department was organized in 1961. Today the fire department is comprised of twenty volunteers operating four fire units and an EMS first responder unit. The City of Oshkosh, population 887, is located in south central Garden County. The Oshkosh volunteer fire department was organized in 1918. Today the fire department is comprised of 23 volunteers operating eight fire units. Emergency medical service for the fire district is provided by the Garden County Hospital in Oshkosh.
