Nebraska Weed Control Act 1989

It is the responsibility of each person who owns or controls land within the State of Nebraska to effectively control noxious weeds on such land. Within Garden county, the noxious weeds are: Musk Thistles, Plumeless Thistles, Canada Thistle, Spotted Knapweed, Diffuse Knapweed, Leafy Spurge, Bindweed, and Purple Loosestrife.

Your willing cooperation in controlling these weeds not only provides an increased economic return to you as the landowner, but also greatly improves relations with adjacent landowners. Effective control can include any on or all of the following methods: spraying, cultivation, and mowing. Failure to take action may result in the Garden County Weed Control Authority taking legal action to effect control.

Bindweed is also on the Garden County Noxious Weeds list. Bindweed must be controlled in Garden County.

Commong Name: Field bindweed (Morningglory family)
Scientific Name: Convolvulaceae

Field Bindweed Plant

Field bindweed is a perennial from an extensive root system, often forming dense tangled mats. Stems are prostrate, 1 to 4 feet long. Leaves alternate, more or less arrowhead-shaped with spreading, pointed or blunt lobes at the base. The flowers are bell- or trumpet-shaped, white to pinkish, approximately 1 inch in diameter with 2 small bracts located 1 inch below the flower. Fruit is a small round capsule, usually 4-seeded. Seeds are dull brown, roughened, flattened on two sides, round on the other and about 1/6 inch long.

Field bindweed was introduced from Europe and has become a widespread and serious weed problem in all parts of the U.S. except the southeastern states. In the western United States, it is extensively distibuted in cultivated fields and waste places. Because of its remarkable adaptability to different environmental conditions, it may be found at altitudes as high as 10,000 feet. It is a difficult weed to eradicate because of th elong deep taproot which can penetrate the soil to a depth of 10 feet and which gives rise to numberous long lateral roots. Seeds remain viable for up to 50 years. The flowering period is from late June until frost in the fall.

Field Bindweed Leaves

Leaves of field bindweed are shaped like arrowheads. Thay are normally slender with sharp pointed lobes, though many variations occur.

Field Bindweed Flower

Flowers are funnel-shaped and vary in color from white to pink. Note tiny bracts 1 inch below base of flower.

Upon failure to observe this notice, the county weed superintendent is required to:

  • 1. Proceed pursuant to the law and issue legal notice to the landowner of property infested with noxious weeds giving such landowner 15 days to control the noxious weed infestation.
