The Story:
The mass migration of people from Eastern states to California, Oregon and Utah affected
the lives of the Sioux and other tribes along the trail - disease, loss of game and grass,
trading, and treaties all changed the way of life of the Lakota Sioux. In 1854 a lame cow
from a Mormon wagon train started a chain of events resulting in the death of Lt. Grattan
and 29 soldiers at Fort Laramie. General Harney was sent to avenge their deaths. A group
of Brule and Ogallala camped on Blue Water Creek were attacked early in the morning of
Sept. 3, 1855. This was the beginning of the war between the Lakota and the US Army that
ended with the Battle of the Little Big Horn and Wounded Knee.
Traditional native Dancers and Drummers:
Drummers and traditional dancers from Rosebud Reservation - descendants of Chief Little Thunder - will perform before and during pageant.
Period Music
The live band includes military drum, bugle, violin, bass viol, harmonica and guitar.
