Regular Meeting Minutes
October 19, 2006

The Chamber met at the Eagles, 21 members attending. President Carol Lake called the meeting to order at 7:15 PM.

Minutes of the last meeting were reviewed. Tom Sullivan moved to accept the minutes, seconded by Mike Sullivan. Motion carried.

Bonnie Eckles presented the Treasurer's report.

Old Business:
  • Nominating Committee Report - will meet with Nathan Loyd, President-Elect concerning possible candidates for office and be ready for nomination and election at November meeting.
  • Jim McKeeman, a member of the Garden County Health Services Assisted Living Task Force updated members of the Board of Trustees meeting on 10/18. The Board voted to keep the Assisted Living facility open for 3 years, while working on funding and recruitment of residents.
  • Received $40 prize for Lisco Day parade entry. Will return prize check to the Lisco Community.
  • Received Thank You from Kyle O'Brien for Chamber Scholarship.
  • Received card from a Texas visitor, who commented on friendly service and greetings they experienced in Oshkosh.
Committee Reports:
  • Lynn Klemke, representing Garden County Schools, introduced Josh Woolery to the Chamber. Josh is a member of National Honor Society and approached the Chamber about student organizations seeking involvement in community service. He invites us to ask students for help in community projects.

    In other school news: On 10/31 grades K-5 will parade down Main Street. The education theme for the parade is "Wild About Reading." Immediately following the parade, students will make a reverse trip up Main Street and visit businesses. If you are interested in student's visiting your business, contact Buddy Paulsen.

    Lynn reported on a SPED program that places students at businesses to learn work skills. Students are not paid for work performed during school hours and are assisted by a Jobs Coach. They learn valuable skills and how to become productive citizens. The Schools thank businesses for their past and future help in this program.

    The State of the Schools Reports should be available on the Nebraska Department of Education website beginning 10/23. The report can be assessed by town and compared with other schools. Information items include: reading and math standards, attendance/graduation/drop-out rate, salary comparisons, and much more.

New Business:
  • CVA Film Company will meet with area officials and tourism members 10/20 to discuss the possibility of filming a spot to be aired on vacation channels nationwide.
  • Chamber Christmas Party will be in January, place to be announced later. Other Christmas discussion: Ask students to help sack candy and be Santa's Helpers; weekly soup supper in December.
  • Election of Officers at November meeting. There will be NO meeting in December.
