Regular Meeting Minutes
January 19, 2006

The Chamber met at the Eagles Club in Oshkosh, 6:30 PM. The Eagles Auxiliary provided the meal and refreshments.

Todd Royston, 2nd Vice-President called the meeting to order at 7:20 PM.

He introduced and welcomed Glenda Edmond, Manager of Kwik Stop to the meeting.

Marlis Shearer introduced the speaker:

Chuck Karpf, Director of the Entrepreneur & Discover Centers at WNCC.

Mr. Karpf spoke on the value of the Entrepreneurial Programs offered at the college that benefit both adults and students. There are many educational and grant programs available. WNCC will offer programs in Oshkosh for persons wanting to start a business or looking for guidance in building their business, if we prove interest in such training.

The minutes of the last meeting were reviewed. Mike Sullivan moved to accept the minutes as presented. Bonnie Eckles seconded. Motion carried.

Old Business:

Todd Royston extended a thank you to Bonnie Eckles and Kathleen Loyd for organizing the Chamber Christmas Party.

Marlis Shearer reported on the Scenic ByWays meeting. The University of Nebraska is offering training for front-line personnel, "Red Carpet Service Training". The training is intended to teach how to meet and greet visitors well in order to promote tourism. The ByWays group will pay for the training, $1,250.00 for Garden and Morrill Counties. The training will be offered April 18. All are encouraged to attend.

The ByWays committee has applied for a grant to sponsor events for the 2006 Sturgis Bike Week. The grant is to help those hosting events along the By-Way and all communities are encouraged to be involved. An ad will be placed in a biker magazine listing the events offered. Members are encouraged to bring ideas for our area.

Mike Sullivan reported the July 4, 2006 preparations are underway. He is working with Alumni committees to coordinate events. Garden County Health Services will be sponsoring an alumni golf tournament Saturday afternoon. It was suggested maybe downtown businesses could be opened on Saturday for alumni to visit.

Pam Milanuk, Boy Scout leader asked the Chamber not to compete in glow-in-the-dark necklace sales over July 4 activities. This has been a money maker for Boy Scout Camp for several years. Delmer Westerbuhr moved the Chamber would not sell glow-in-the-dark necklaces. Ron Shearer seconded. Motion carried.

Paula Sissel gave a report on the recent Visioning Workshop held and facilitated by Shirley Mills. There will soon be surveys distributed for community input. She also reported on the Before and After School Program success. There will be a "Family Fun Night", February 14, 2006 and encourages the community to attend. They will be serving sloppy joes, baked beans, chips and providing entertainment.

Emily Nelson and Emily McGinley gave a presentation on their hopes of being Garden County Schools representatives to the "People-to-People World Leadership Forum" in Washington D.C. The cost of the trip is $1,800.00. They have raised $800.00. Motion made by Todd Royston, seconded by Barb Moffat to donate $100.00 and offer support to any fund-raising endeavor the girls may host. Motion carried.

Discussion was held on Chamber donations to organizations. Consideration should be given to the budget first and possibly establishing a routine donation amount.

Bonnie Eckles asked if the Chamber wanted to co-host the St. Patrick's Day Party at the Eagles. Motion made by Barb Moffat, seconded by Janet Shaul to Co-Host. Motion carried.

Farm and Ranch Day is January 25. The Chamber can host a table on the stage at no cost. It provides a good Chamber presence to the community. Help is needed to man the booth. A sign-up sheet was passed for volunteers and it was suggested enlisting help from high school students as well.

The next regular meeting will be February 16 at 6:30 PM. Location to be announced. The program will be presented by Cindy Miller on Garden County Health Services billing.
