The vision of the Garden County Entrepreneurial Community is to create the capacity of rural residents to generate and retain wealth in Garden County.

Home Town Competiveness  Introduction Meeting
 

Goal 1: Identify lead organization members to direct the economic development process in Garden County.

Objective 1: Establish structure for steering committee.
Objective 2: Develop committee structure to retain involvement of and coordinate efforts between all partners and social and service
organizations.
Objective 3: Contract with local person to coordinate grant project.
Objective 4: Review policies that promote or limit economic development.
Objective 5: Provide central location to coordinate development and share resources.
Objective 6: Establish time table for reporting and evaluating progress. Review goals and objectives, evaluate progress of ongoing training and celebrate successes. Include community input in process. Publicize successes.

Evaluation criteria:

  • Working steering committee
  • Working committees
  • Hire contract coordinator
  • Identification and changes in policies that discourage economic development
  • Published evaluation
  • Community celebration

Goal 2: Train community residents in strategic planning methods to allow for broad-based planning in the county including youth, business community and support services.

Objective 1: Hold 2 open meetings to train residents in strategic planning methods using Take 5 approach.
Objective 2: Involve high school students in county economic development through youth planning and training, membership in county organizations and with specific projects.
Objective 3: Identify and develop community vision.
Objective 4: Conduct focus group discussion of new and future entrepreneurs to determine technical assistance and training needs. Include agriculture, established businesses, home based businesses, hunting/fishing services.
Objective 5: Identify and collect data, surveys and planning documents that already exist for County and make available to public.

Evaluation Criteria:

  • 2 Strategic planning training sessions attended by at least 20 people.
  • High School planning sessions led by high school students
  • Published community vision
  • Focus group, interviews and surveys completed with identified training needs.
  • Economic development plan published

Goal 3:Provide training for business development and retention.

Objective 1: Provide at least 2 training sessions in marketing and other area identified through community planning (e.g. tourism, coop, business plan development, grant writing).
Objective 2: Work with community college and school to provide training programs and possible credit or certificate from college for successful completion.
Objective 3: Connect to existing training programs in the region to provide in-depth training including at least 2 people to Home Town Competitiveness training.
Objective 4: Identify specific needs for trained personnel (e.g. nurses) and educate populace and students to need and identify sources of scholarships to help provide training. Encourage local scholarship donors to target these needs.

Evaluation Criteria:

  • At least 2 training programs in marketing and other critical skill for economic growth identified in community.
  • At least 20 people trained in each skill area
  • College credit classes arranged with WNCC for distance learning.
  • Tuition partial payments for residents taking extended training.
